Myself (and others I know) have set goals to read 50 books in the course of a year. I'm not sure it proves anything, since those setting the goal were already part of the "40%", but perhaps it will show that the reading audience out here is voracious and perhaps there's a chance that our love of reading will spread.
Anyway, here's my updated list of books read thus far. I've still got a ways to go (I slacked off a little over the summer).
Books I've read in 2008:
- Grimm's Fairy Tales
- The Candy Shop War
- The Garden In Which I Walk
- Alice's Adventures In Wonderland
- Alice's Adventures Through The Looking Glass
- The Looking Glass Wars
- The Jungle Books
- Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
- Peter Pan (Peter & Wendy)
- Dark Wraith of Shannara
- The Eyre Affair
- From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
- Hide and Seek
- The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe
- The Great Book of Amber: The Complete Amber Chronicles, 1-10 (Chronicles of Amber)
- The Pale Blue Eye
- The Catcher in the Rye
- Speak
- Artemis Fowl (book 1)
- My Name is Asher Lev
- Bless Me, Ultima
- Seeing Redd (Looking Glass Wars Book 2)
- The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
- Sucks to Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire (maybe)
- The Book Thief
- Virgins and Martyrs
- City of Ember
- Into the Wild
- Sideways Stories From Wayside School
- House of the Scorpion
- The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
- The Picture of Dorian Gray
- Push
- The Canterbury Tales
- Wayside School is Falling Down
- A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Stories
Well...only a week and a half to go and I'm at 37 books (with 2 more nearly finished). I don't think I'll hit my goal of 50, but I should hit 40...not too far off. I'll start next year's goal earlier and track it better.

Sorry you don't know me, (link of a link of a link) but I like your goal and am very glad you found Jasper Fforde. If you haven't, try the Nursery Crime series by him.
Thanks for the recommendation. I definitely plan to keep pushing through the Thursday Next series. They're a lot of fun. I'll definitely add Nursery Crimes to the list.
I'm so glad someone can actually get through some of the humor. I recommended one of the books to a guy and he just couldn't get through it! Oh, and the books do get a lot funner after the Eyre Affair.
you sound smart, you should read my blog
What a great list of stories to have knocking around in your head.
I want to read 50 books!
Steve Jobs is among the other 60% I guess!
How can someone kick reading?!!
