Who Do You Write Like?

Jon Paul over at Sky Meets Ground found and posted this cool little web app over at the "I Write Like" blog. The app prompts you to paste in a chunk of your writing and then it analyzes the writing against a database of famous authors. There's no indication as to how the analysis happens...I suspect it's a combination of sentence and paragraph length/structure, dialog versus scene, adverb/adjective usage, and other word frequency. Still, it would be cool to have a peek at the criteria. :)

In any case, I ran the analyzer against a number of my "Wednesday Writings" posts starting with the first few stand alone stories and then pulling chunks from my ongoing story that I've been working on over the past few weeks.

The results were varied and kind of interesting. Here's who the analyzer suggested my writing is like:

I write like
Dan Brown

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

I write like
H. P. Lovecraft

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

I write like
James Joyce

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

I write like
Chuck Palahniuk

I Write Like by Mémoires, Mac journal software. Analyze your writing!

I write like
Vladimir Nabokov

How about you? Who do you write like?

I got Dan Brown - unfortunately.

That's a pretty wide selection, especially since I would think a couple of them are radically different.

David Foster Wallace. So his works have now been added to my "to read" list. :)

Ooh, very cool indeed. I tried a few different styles of my writing and got James Joyce, Dan Brown, William Shakespeare, and David Foster Wallace. I wonder what the criteria is? Still, pretty cool.

Well that was certainly fun. I got plug in a couple flash fiction published on my blog and one I'm working on, my WIP, and a blog post.
Stephen King for Hannah’s Fate
Vladimir Nabokov for Thanksgiving Feast
William Gibson for FF TBP
Arthur C. Clarke for WIP
Dan Brown for blog post

What a range.

ah, it's a really interesting combination of writers you have in you, Okie :)) Although I must admit I never liked Joyce as an author.

Score! I write like Mark Twain! lol I'm good with that!

You should definitely give Hood a read... and read his author's note at the end! It helps a lot with understanding why he wrote the tale the way he did. Personally I loved the Robin Hood movie! In fact, I saw it twice in theatres. It's actually a combination of what the experts believe to be the true Robin Hood stories. It had a really good soundtrack score as well :o)
