Feb Story - 9

[NOTE: This is part of a progressive story. The first entry is here. Check the blog label 2007Story for all entries]

Daniel Call jogged in place slowly, one hand to his neck to check his pulse. As he counted, his day passed through his mind. His first day as vice principal had gone well, at least as far as he was concerned.

Admittedly, there were only a few minor issues he had to deal with and he only had to meet with one student, Blake. He still wasn't sure what to make of his conversation with Blake. He knew that Blake was lying. That ridiculous story about being run down by grocery carts. Daniel finally let himself laugh at it. But why would a boy like Blake suddenly have a run of tardies and truancies? His best guess was that something had happened at home. He hoped Blake would get together with Dr. Samuelson and work something out. He intended to check with each of them the following day to be sure a session took place. Blake had too much potential. Daniel hated to think of him falling apart.

Satisfied with his pulse, Daniel slowly increased the speed of his legs and then started running again. As he turned up Main Street to work his way home he noticed Blake near the end of the block. Blake was walking along the road with another student, it looked like Anthony Jacobs. Daniel slowed his pace and watched the two boys as they walked along the road bantering back and forth. Daniel noted that Blake held his cane in the middle, not using it for support at all and there was no indication of even the slightest limp. The boys disappeared into a shop on the side of the street. Daniel jogged down the road, noting the store they had entered, a small electronics shop. Through the window he could see them chatting with a salesperson.

Daniel continued his run home; worrying again about Blake; hoping that everything was alright; praying that he would meet with the school psychologist tomorrow and work everything out.
