Teenager arrested for opening Christmas present early

Wow...this is just a little too much. As a Christmas present to her teenage son, a mother purchased a "Playstation GameBoy" (??) but in addition, she gave him a "petty larceny" arrest on his criminal record because he opened the present before Christmas when she had given explicit instructions that he was "not to bother it because it was a present for Christmas."

According to the report, the kid had issues with the law before this, so this didn't seem to be the first/only thing on his record. But still...having your kid ARRESTED for sneaking under the Christmas tree and opening his present. Regardless of the level of delinquency of the child, something seems way off base with that parenting method.
