Board Game Review - Nidavellir

Nidavellir is one of those games that I kept seeing on the ‘Hotness’ list but never really took the time to learn anything about it. I finally decided to give it a try and I’m glad I did.

Thematically, Nidavellir is the name of the Dwarf Kingdom and the kingdom is being threatened. Your goal is to hire up an army to help repel the threat. Honestly, the melding of the theme is pretty tenuous but the art and style is fun.
At a high level this is an auction game where you bid coins to try and hire cards from three different taverns. The cards interact in a set collection / combo method to score points and give some unique bonuses and abilities.

Each round, a number of cards will be dealt to three different taverns and players place blind bids against each tavern and then reveal their bids, letting the highest bidder choose the first card and so on.    At the start of the game, each player has the same set of coins to bid. But each round, a player may bid their ‘zero’ coin which allows them to spend other coins to swap up to a higher value coin.

I really enjoyed the fun simultaneous blind bidding auction combined with the element of deciding when to bid zero and improve your coin pool. I didn’t have a great feel for strategy as there are numerous ways to combine cards for points in different ways. I want to try it again to explore the variety of paths to victory.

Gameplay was quick (about 45 minutes for 4 of us and it was a ‘learning’ game). Even though the theme may not appeal to everybody, it’s applied thinly enough that I feel like it wouldn’t be hard to get most folks to give it a go. I rather enjoyed it and will look for other opportunities to try it again.

 Have you played this one?

What are your thoughts?
